Homeschool Dual Enrollment in Illinois

Illinois homeschoolers take college courses in high school by applying directly to a community college, and the family pays the college's tuition and fees.

How dual credit works for homeschoolers

Illinois treats a homeschool as a private school, and no state program pays a homeschooler's college tuition. A homeschooled teen enrolls at the college directly, the way an adult student would, under the college's own admission rules.

Each college sets its own rules for admitting students under 18 and for placing them into college-level courses. The credit appears on a college transcript, and as administrator of your homeschool you decide whether the course also counts toward your child's high school graduation.

Colleges also decide which courses a student under 18 may take, so a course open to adults can still be closed to a high school student.

Before your child can enroll

  1. College admission

Your child completes the college's application and meets its rules for students under 18.

  2. Placement

Your child places into each college-level course through the college's placement process or a prerequisite.

Enrolling in a college course

  1. First step

Ask the admissions office at your in-district community college how it admits homeschooled high school students and when it gives placement tests.

  2. What it costs

Tuition, fees, and books are the family's to pay.

  3. When to apply

Apply and take placement tests a few weeks before the college's registration opens for the semester you want.
