Find your child’s starting level.

Every subject starts where your child is ready, not where their grade assumes. In grades 3 to 12, a child who prefers paper can print the free placement test and upload a photo of the answer sheet.

Where each subject begins

Each subject gets its own starting point, which can be in the middle of a grade. Your child might begin in the middle of fourth-grade math and the beginning of fifth-grade reading.

The test is written for your child using the subject's skills, their grade, and interests they have shared. It adapts as they answer, finding which ideas they know and where they need to begin.

There is no timer. Progress saves along the way, so your child can pause and return. Most tests take about 15 to 25 minutes, with 25 questions in grades 3 to 12 or 12 for younger learners.

Reading the placement result

The report shows your child's estimated level, strengths, and skills to practice next. Where there is enough evidence in grades 6 and up, it also estimates a national percentile band using published MAP Growth norms.

A free check leaves existing courses unchanged. Placement during plan setup uses the result to build the course, with any recommended change of grade explained before it begins.

Your child can retake placement in a subject while completed work stays saved. You can also choose a full subject reset, which starts a new course and clears that subject's progress.

Kindergarten through grade 2

Younger learners hear questions and answer choices aloud and often answer by tapping a picture. An adult can sit beside them while they show what they know, whether that is counting a group of stars or hearing the first sound in a word.

This spoken, picture-based test is taken in the app. The result starts the early reading, language, or math course within kindergarten through grade 2; lessons then confirm each skill through your child's own work.

Placement for electives

For an elective such as robotics, placement questions draw from that elective's own skills, from understanding the basic ideas to applying them in more advanced work. Your child's answers show where to begin within the elective, without changing their school grade.

FAQ

Is placement an official standardized test?
No. It's a planning tool for choosing where each course starts, not an official MAP Growth, AP, or state test.
Can placement diagnose a learning difficulty?
No. It finds a starting point in one subject. If you're worried about reading development, attention, or anxiety, talk with a qualified educator or health professional.
