Homeschool Dual Enrollment in New Jersey

New Jersey has no state dual enrollment program for homeschoolers. Each county college sets its own rules for admitting high-school-age students, and at least one offers a discounted rate that homeschoolers can use.

How college courses work for homeschoolers

The state's homeschool rules set no admission standard for colleges. A homeschooled teen applies to a college directly and follows its admission and placement rules.

Rowan College of South Jersey

Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) runs the High School Option Program (HSOP). It lets high school and homeschooled students take an unlimited number of courses at a reduced tuition rate in the fall, winter, spring, and summer terms, and it is open to students who live in or out of the college's counties.

Completed courses can count toward an RCSJ associate degree or transfer to other colleges. RCSJ also awards up to 30 credits through Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and other credit exams.

Before your child can enroll

  1. Age at RCSJ

HSOP students are 14 to 18 years old.

  2. Placement and prerequisites

Your child meets every testing and course prerequisite before registering. Without a qualifying score for an exemption, your child takes the placement test.

  3. Application documents

After applying online, your child sends standardized test scores and a Permission to Enroll form.

Enrolling in a college course

  1. First step

Ask the admissions office at your county college whether it admits homeschooled high school students and at what tuition rate.

  2. Course and funding limits

At RCSJ, the spring semester of senior year is the last term at the HSOP rate. Summer courses after senior year need a regular application and the standard tuition rate.

  3. What it costs

At RCSJ, HSOP students get a tuition discount of $75 per credit and pay no course or lab fees, but a $23 per credit fee covers First Day Complete, the college's textbook and materials program. Other county colleges set their own prices.

  4. When to apply

Apply and finish placement testing before the college's registration date for the term you want.
