How dual credit works for homeschoolers

The Public Education Department (PED) says Senate Bill 158, the Dual Credit Program Parity law, lets home school students join the New Mexico Dual Credit Program with a tuition and fee waiver. A dual credit course earns both high school and college credit, must apply toward a college degree or certificate, and cannot be remedial, developmental, or a physical education activity class.

Applying

Your child needs a state-issued student ID number, a transcript, a Next Step Plan, and a completed Dual Credit Request Form. If the ID field in your home school registration account is blank, ask PED's dual credit office to assign one. A home school student also enrolls in a meta-major, a broad field of study at the college.

Course limits

A home school student may take up to two dual credit courses a semester, and up to four in the last year of high school. To stay in the program, the student keeps making progress toward graduation and earns a C or higher in each dual credit course.

Before your child can enroll

  1. Registered with PED

Your child is registered as a home school student with PED.

  2. Under 18

Home school students leave the program at their 18th birthday, whatever their diploma status.

  3. No diploma yet

Your child has not yet earned a high school diploma or equivalency credential.

  4. College placement

Your child meets the college's placement standards for the course.

Enrolling in a college course

  1. First step

Pick a course at a public college near you and contact its dual credit office about the home school process.

  2. Course and funding limits

New dual credit students, and students changing their pathway, register with a fully signed course request form instead of online registration.

  3. What it costs

Your family pays for textbooks, materials, course-specific fees, and transportation.

  4. When to apply

Follow the college's calendar for registration, drop, withdrawal, and refund dates.
