Homeschool Dual Enrollment in South Dakota
Yes. South Dakota homeschoolers in grades 11 and 12 can take state-subsidized dual credit courses at public universities and technical colleges, at a rate set well below regular tuition.
How dual credit works for homeschoolers
SDCL 13-28-37.1 sets up the high school dual credit program for students in grades 11 and 12. The Board of Regents sets the dual credit rate at 43 percent of undergraduate tuition; the family pays half of that rate, and the state pays the other half. No public institution may add fees.
A course your homeschool approves earns full credit toward high school graduation as well as college credit. A failing final grade ends a student's eligibility for the program.
The college applies its own admission standards before it registers your child.
Before your child can enroll
Notification and agreement
Your alternative instruction notification is updated with yes to its dual credit question, and you have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Department of Education.
Younger students
A student in grade 9 or 10 may apply to a college as a special student, at the tuition rate the college sets, once the homeschool approves the course.
Enrolling in a college course
First step
The semester before your child's junior year, open the alternative instruction system and update the notification.
What it costs
Books, materials, and transportation are the family's to cover, on top of its half of the tuition.
When to apply
Start the semester before eligibility, so the notification and MOU are on file before college registration opens.
