How college courses work for homeschoolers

16 V.S.A. 944 names home study students among those eligible. The course has to be part of your child's personalized learning plan, a written plan of the student's goals and courses. The college decides whether your child is ready, in part through its placement test.

The Agency of Education asks home study families who want dual enrollment to file a minimum course of study, the outline of the subjects you teach each year. Its Home Study Team shares that outline with the team that runs dual enrollment and early college.

Early College, which places a student at college for the last year of high school, asks for the same two documents.

Before your child can enroll

  1. Grade 10 done

Your child is a Vermont resident enrolled in home study and has completed grade 10.

  2. A plan on file

You have filed a minimum course of study, and the college course is written into your child's learning plan.

  3. College readiness

The college finds your child ready for the course, partly through its assessment.

Enrolling in a college course

  1. First step

Contact the Agency of Education's Home Study Team to file the minimum course of study, then choose a course at a participating Vermont college.

  2. Course and funding limits

The free tuition covers up to two dual enrollment courses before your child finishes high school.

  3. What it costs

Neither you nor your child pays tuition for those two courses. Ask the college whether it charges fees or expects you to buy books.

  4. When to apply

Start the plan well before the college's registration date for the term, since the course of study has to reach the dual enrollment team first.
