Homeschool benefits: Kodiak Island Borough School District
AKTEACH, the Kodiak Island Borough School District's homeschool correspondence program, gives each K-12 student a 2026-27 allotment of $2,600 for full-time enrollment or $1,300 for half time, spent on curriculum, supplies, lessons, and classes in your child's learning plan. Students ages 5 to 20 who live inside the district's boundaries qualify.
Who qualifies
Lives in the Kodiak district
Enrollment is open to students ages 5 to 20 who keep a permanent address inside the Kodiak Island Borough School District boundaries. Kindergartners must turn 5 by September 1.
Enrolls in AKTEACH
Your child becomes a district correspondence student. Complete the online enrollment and turn in a birth certificate, immunization record or waiver, a School Information Form, a media release, and a W-9, which you must file each year to be reimbursed.
Takes enough courses
Full time means at least four AKTEACH courses, with at least half in core subjects. Half time means at least three AKTEACH courses, two of them core, and no more than three classes at another district school.
Follows a learning plan
You write an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) with your contact teacher, due September 18 or within 10 days of a later enrollment, and every purchase must match it.

From enrolling to spending it
- Before Sept. 27, 2026

Write the ILP
Plan your child's courses with the contact teacher. Reimbursement requests are accepted only after a completed ILP is on file.

Good to know
Your child enrolls to get the allotment
AKTEACH is the district's homeschool correspondence program, so your child enrolls as a public correspondence student while you teach at home under an approved ILP.
The allotment cannot pay for religious curriculum
Faith-based curriculum cannot be paid for with the allotment, but you may teach with materials of your choice at your own cost, and AKTEACH accepts faith-based academic programs for credit with your contact teacher's approval. Faith-based vendors may be used to buy non-faith-based materials.
Who to contact
AKTEACH staff answer enrollment questions and approve purchases, vendors, and items over $300 before you buy.

Questions parents ask
- Can the allotment buy a laptop?
- No. AKTEACH does not let the allotment buy a laptop or tablet, but you can check one out from the program.
- Can my child also take classes at Kodiak High School?
- Yes, if space allows. A full-time AKTEACH student can take up to two courses at Kodiak Middle School or Kodiak High School and still receive the full allotment; taking more changes it to half or none.
- What happens if we withdraw in the middle of the year?
- If your child withdraws before November 1, you must repay allotment spending or return what was bought. Items costing $300 or more belong to the district and must be returned or bought out, and loaned computers are due back within 10 days.
