Homeschool benefits and savings in Farmington
Farmington's Recreation Scholarship takes 75%, 50%, or 25% off Farmington Recreation instructional program fees, up to $750, $500, or $250 per child each year, depending on household income. Any Farmington resident family under the income limits can apply, with no school-enrollment rule, so homeschooled children qualify.
Who qualifies
Lives in Farmington
The scholarship is for Farmington residents who otherwise could not afford Farmington Recreation programs.
Under the income limits
Gross household income, before taxes and deductions, must fall under the limit for your family size. Lower incomes get a bigger discount.
Approved by Supportive Services
The town's Supportive Services Supervisor verifies your income, and your most recent tax return may be requested.
Applies two weeks ahead
Submit the eligibility application at least two weeks before you register for a program.
What the scholarship is worth
Farmington's 2026-2027 Recreation Scholarship guidelines set three discount levels by family size and income, with the 75% level for households below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.
- 75% off (family of 4 up to $66,000)
- $750
- 50% off (family of 4 up to $77,550)

- $250
- Two children at the 75% level
- $1,500
- Three children at the 50% level

Approval does not hold a spot: many programs are limited, and you still register through the normal process while space remains.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Connecticut
State law does not require a homeschool notice. The State Department of Education asks parents to tell their local school district that they intend to homeschool, but that request is guidance, not a legal requirement.
Connecticut sets these rules:
- Subjects: Instruction in Connecticut must include reading, writing, spelling, English grammar, geography, arithmetic, US history, and citizenship.
- Testing: Connecticut does not require standardized testing for homeschoolers.
- Records: Connecticut does not require homeschool records, but keeping them is recommended.
- Teachers: Connecticut does not require a teaching certificate or degree to homeschool your own child.
