Homeschool benefits: Walton County School District
Walton County technical dual enrollment lets a registered Florida home education student age 16 or older take a career program at Emerald Coast Technical College (ECTC) with no registration, matriculation, or lab fees, and with textbooks supplied by the school district. Your student needs a 2.5 unweighted GPA and qualifying TABE scores, and applications for the January 2027 start close October 15, 2026.
Who qualifies
Registered Florida home education student
Your home education program must comply with section 1002.41 of the Florida Statutes, the state home education law. Students taking classes full time through Florida Virtual School are not eligible at ECTC.
Age 16 with a 2.5 GPA
Your student must be at least 16 and hold a cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.5 or higher. ECTC says space is limited for 11th and 12th graders.
Meets TABE readiness scores
Your student needs the program's required scores on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). ECTC Student Services arranges the test and tells you the scores for each program.
Clean record and a certification goal
Your student must have no disciplinary action in the prior semester, stay free of it while enrolled, and pursue an approved industry certification.

Test and attend the session
Your student takes the TABE at the ECTC Testing Center, and you and your student attend a mandatory information session on ECTC's academic progress policies.
- While enrolled
Meet adult program standards
Dual students follow the same grading and attendance rules as adult students to earn postsecondary adult vocational (PSAV) credit.
- Before graduation
Finish the course first
Your student cannot be scheduled to graduate from high school before the dual enrollment course ends, so plan a senior's program length carefully.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Florida
You must file the initial written notice with the county superintendent within 30 days of starting. You must file a termination notice and the annual evaluation within 30 days of ending the program.
Florida sets these rules:
- Subjects: Parent-directed instruction; Florida law does not prescribe a specific curriculum for a home education program.
- Testing: Provide an annual educational evaluation using one statutory method; a portfolio review is one option, and an alternate method requires agreement with the district superintendent.
- Records: Keep a portfolio with an activities log made as instruction occurs, reading-material titles, and work samples. Preserve it for two years and make it available for inspection on 15 days’ written notice.
- Teachers: Florida does not require a teaching certificate or degree to homeschool your own child.
Florida also has two education savings accounts that home-educated students can use.
- The Personalized Education Program funds a Florida K-12 student's approved education costs through a scholarship organization, with income and priority rules. It is separate from registering a home education program with your district.
- The Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities funds approved education and disability costs for a student with a qualifying disability, including one in a registered home education program. The award depends on the disability and its services.
