Homeschool benefits: Knoxville Community School District
The Knoxville Home School Assistance Program (KHSAP) is free for K-12 homeschool families and lends curriculum of your choosing from its resource library, with certified teachers who are homeschool parents, enrichment classes, open gym, field trips, and free testing. Families in the Knoxville district enroll directly, and families from other districts join through open enrollment.
Who qualifies
Lives in or open enrolls
Families in the Knoxville Community School District enroll directly. Families elsewhere file open enrollment with both districts by March 1 before the school year, or by September 1 of the kindergarten year.
Completes both enrollment forms
Fill out the online KHSAP enrollment form and the district's Infinite Campus enrollment for each student.
Keeps teacher contacts
You need at least four contacts a quarter with a KHSAP teacher, half of them face to face with your child; KHSAP activities can count.
Pella families have a second route
Pella Community School District residents can stay enrolled in Pella and join KHSAP through a 28E sharing agreement by filing Form A with Pella and registering with KHSAP.

What it includes
Included
- Resource library of textbooks, teacher guides, and manipulatives
- Certified supervising teachers
- Enrichment classes, clubs, and field trips
- Optional testing and screening
- Parent learning groups and college and career planning help
Not included
- Access to public school classes, which needs dual enrollment
- Some textbook or software fees
- Teacher visits outside the Knoxville district
KHSAP and dual enrollment are separate programs: KHSAP runs its own activities, and dual enrollment opens public school classes and PSEO college courses. Your child can do both.
Good to know
You choose your curriculum
Parents decide what resources to use and can change curricula or approaches at any time during the year without notifying the district.
Missed visits lead to warnings, then a letter
A first miss is rescheduled and a second brings a verbal warning. A third unexcused miss brings a registered letter giving you 14 days to choose another legal option.
Who to contact about the program
HSAP coordinator Cara Readout, at the back of the KCSD bus barn at 1215 W. Robinson St., answers questions about enrollment and services.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Iowa
You do not have to file a homeschool notice for independent private instruction.
Iowa sets these rules:
- Subjects: IPI must cover mathematics, reading and language arts, science, and social studies at all grade levels. CPI must provide at least 148 days of instruction annually, with attendance on at least 37 days each school quarter; its other rules depend on the option.
- Testing: No standardized testing required for independent option.
- Records: IPI must provide specified instructor, location, authority, and student information on written request; CPI reporting and record rules depend on the option.
- Teachers: Iowa does not require a teaching certificate or degree to homeschool your own child.

Questions parents ask
- Can my child take a class at Knoxville High School through KHSAP?
- Not through KHSAP alone. Public school classes and PSEO college courses come through dual enrollment, which is also free and can be combined with KHSAP.
- Is standardized testing required?
- No. KHSAP offers optional testing, including FastBridge and the ISASP for grades 3-11, and testing through Heartland AEA in Johnston at no charge.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
Local classes cover the subjects they offer. We teach the remaining subjects, so a local class can stay part of the year without becoming the whole curriculum.
$149/month per child after the trial.
