Homeschool rules and statewide help in Kansas
You must register the school name, address, and records custodian with KSDE once, not annually. You must notify the previous school when transferring a student.
Kansas sets these rules:
- Subjects: Parents choose the curriculum. Instruction must be competent and substantially equivalent in time to the local public school term.
- Testing: Kansas does not require standardized testing for homeschoolers.
- Records: KSDE recommends complete progress records for transfers and college admission; it does not prescribe a homeschool portfolio or attendance-record format.
- Teachers: Courses must be taught by competent instructors; a state teaching license is not required.

Questions parents ask
- Does my homeschooled child need a Qualified Access Membership?
- No. Qualified Access matters for the adults in your household.
- We do not have a school lunch letter. What proof works for a Lawrence scholarship?
- A KanCare insurance card or documents showing state or federal benefits, such as Housing Authority or DCF assistance, also confirm eligibility.
- Can a homeschooled child get the Wee Folks scholarship?
- Yes. Any Douglas County youth 17 or younger can apply, and the form asks for no school enrollment. Without a school district letter, send a KanCare card copy or an agency letter instead.
- How much will we pay for a camp with Wee Folks?
- You pay half of the camp registration fee. Once a child's scholarships reach $800 for the year, you pay the full fee.
- Is Lawrence Transit On Demand free too?
- No. Since March 1, 2026, each one-way On Demand trip costs $3.
- Can my child ride Lawrence Transit on Sunday?
- Only on On Demand. Fixed routes do not run on Sunday, and On Demand runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. that day at the $3 fare.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
