Homeschool benefits and savings in Salina
Children 10 and under ride Salina CityGo buses free when they travel with someone 16 or older, instead of paying the $1 regular fare. The free fare is based on age, so a homeschooled child qualifies the same as any other.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Kansas
You must register the school name, address, and records custodian with KSDE once, not annually. You must notify the previous school when transferring a student.
Kansas sets these rules:
- Subjects: Parents choose the curriculum. Instruction must be competent and substantially equivalent in time to the local public school term.
- Testing: Kansas does not require standardized testing for homeschoolers.
- Records: KSDE recommends complete progress records for transfers and college admission; it does not prescribe a homeschool portfolio or attendance-record format.
- Teachers: Courses must be taught by competent instructors; a state teaching license is not required.

Questions parents ask
- Does my homeschooled child need a school ID to ride CityGo free?
- No. The free fare depends on your child being 10 or under and riding with someone 16 or older; CityGo lists no school requirement.
- Can my 12-year-old take younger siblings on CityGo?
- No. The person accompanying a child who rides free must be 16 or older.
- Can a homeschooled student buy the CityGo summer pass?
- Yes. CityGo sells the pass by age, 7 through 18, and lists no school requirement.
- Can we still buy a CityGo summer pass this year?
- No. The pass covers June 1 to August 31, and that period has passed for 2026. Ask OCCK when the next summer's passes go on sale.
