Homeschool benefits and savings in Hyattsville
The City of Hyattsville's Children and Youth Camp Scholarship helps Hyattsville families in financial need pay for Spring Break Camp, the Night Owls program, and four weeks of Summer Camp for children in grades K-5. The 2026 awards ended August 14, and applications for spring and summer 2027 open in early 2027.
Who qualifies
Lives in Hyattsville
Your family must live in the incorporated City of Hyattsville. The city's address lookup confirms whether an address is inside city limits.
Has a child in grades K-5
A parent or guardian applies for dependents in kindergarten through fifth grade. A homeschooled child qualifies by grade level, since the city lists no school enrollment requirement.
Shows financial need
Show need in one of three ways: enrollment in a federal or state assistance program, household income, or a financial hardship.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Maryland
You must submit the prescribed consent form to the local superintendent at least 15 days before starting. District-supervised families verify continuation before each school year and report status changes. A qualifying nonpublic supervisor reports continuing enrollment and status changes to the district.
Maryland sets these rules:
- Subjects: Provide regular, thorough instruction of sufficient duration in English, math, science, social studies, art, music, health, and PE. A qualifying nonpublic-supervised program must provide regular, thorough instruction in the usual public-school studies.
- Testing: State standardized testing is voluntary. District-supervised programs have portfolio reviews at semester ends, with no more than three reviews per school year.
- Records: For district supervision, keep instructional materials and work samples demonstrating required instruction; college report cards or transcripts may substitute for those courses. Qualifying nonpublic supervision follows COMAR’s separate requirements.
- Teachers: No state teaching credential required for the parent providing home instruction.

Questions parents ask
- Can a homeschooled child get a Hyattsville camp scholarship?
- Yes, if your child is in grades K-5 and you live in the City of Hyattsville. The city's requirements are about residency, grade, and financial need, not school enrollment.
- What counts as financial need for the Hyattsville camp scholarship?
- Proof that you take part in a federal or state assistance program, household W-2s and recent tax returns, or a written description of a hardship with supporting documents.
- My child is in sixth grade. Is there anything for older kids?
- Not through this scholarship, which is limited to grades K-5. Ask Youth Services about other programs for older children.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
Camps and local activities give your child new interests to explore. Their discoveries can shape the examples and questions they study at home.
