Homeschool benefits: Reese Public Schools
Reese Public Schools gives resident homeschool students the right to enroll in nonessential elective courses and their associated co-curricular activities. Your child must meet the same enrollment requirements, course prerequisites, and conduct rules as other district students.
Who qualifies
Lives in the district
Resident home-schooled students who meet Policies 5302 and 5303 have the right to enroll. Nonresident homeschool students may be permitted to enroll, but the policy does not give them the same guarantee.
Matches the grade or age
The elective must be one the district provides to public-school students in your child's grade level or age group.
Meets course and conduct rules
Part-time students follow the same prerequisites and course requirements as other district students. District rules and student codes of conduct also apply.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Michigan
No state report under the parent-led homeschool exemption, MCL 380.1561(3)(f). The nonpublic-school route has separate reporting; an annual membership report is required for eligibility for auxiliary services.
Michigan sets these rules:
- Subjects: Under exemption (f), provide an organized program in reading, spelling, math, science, history, civics, literature, writing, and English grammar. The nonpublic-school route requires subjects comparable to local public schools.
- Testing: Michigan does not require standardized testing for homeschoolers.
- Records: No prescribed homeschool portfolio or attendance-record format under exemption (f). Keep progress records for transfers; the nonpublic-school route has separate reporting requirements.
- Teachers: Under exemption (f), the instructor must be the child’s parent or legal guardian; no degree or teaching credential is required. MDE requires a reporting nonpublic homeschool parent to have at least a bachelor’s degree unless a sincerely held religious objection applies.

Questions parents ask
- Can we apply for Reese shared time from outside Reese?
- Possibly. The district may allow nonresident homeschool students into eligible electives, but the resident enrollment right does not extend to them.
- Are Reese school activities included?
- Only those tied to the elective. The policy includes co-curricular activities associated with the course, not every district activity.
- Will the district transport my child?
- Not necessarily. The policy does not require Reese to transport a part-time nonpublic student, so plan your travel before classes begin.
- Which electives are available?
- Policy 5304 does not name any, including Advanced Placement, driver education, or career and technical education. Ask the district for the current eligible course list.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
Local classes cover the subjects they offer. We teach the remaining subjects, so a local class can stay part of the year without becoming the whole curriculum.
