Homeschool benefits: Benson Public School District
Benson provides nonpublic pupil aid to eligible district homeschools, with a published 2026-27 instructional-material rate of $138.43 per pupil. Current forms request materials on loan; Benson's cash-reimbursement instructions are dated 2024, so a current reimbursement purchase window is not confirmed.
Who qualifies
Operates within Benson district
The current request forms include homeschools established and operating within the district's boundaries. File homeschool registration or continuation paperwork with the district office.
Requested aid by September 15
The 2026-27 forms and state rate memo require requests on behalf of each pupil no later than September 15, 2026. The memo says a parent request after that deadline is ineligible for reimbursement.
Filed student report by October 1
Summarize eligible signed requests on the Student Report for Aids to Nonpublic Students and submit it to Benson by October 1, 2026.
Requests eligible individual-use materials
The current form requires secular materials designed primarily for individual pupil use in the class or program the pupil attends. It requests a loan, rather than promising a cash payment to you.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Minnesota
You must file the initial report by October 1 of the first instructional year after the child turns seven, or after establishing a new resident district. You must file within 15 days of withdrawing a child seven or older from public school, or of moving out of a district. You must file annual continuation letters by October 1 for the required ages.
Minnesota sets these rules:
- Subjects: Teach reading, writing, literature, fine arts, math, science, history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, health, and PE. Instruction and materials are in English unless the statutory language-program exception applies.
- Testing: Annual nationally normed achievement test for ages 7–16, plus certain 16–17-year-olds first reported after age 16. Agree on the test, administration, and location with the superintendent. State-recognized accredited instruction is exempt.
- Records: Unless the accreditation exemption applies, keep schedules, materials, assessment methods, and proof of testing. Keep immunization or exemption records for five years after adulthood. File immunization statements by October 1 of the first homeschool year and grade 7.
- Teachers: A parent may teach without a degree if the assessment requirements are met. Other instructors need a qualifying license, licensed supervision, bachelor’s degree, or recognized accredited-school route.

Questions parents ask
- Does Benson's $138.43 rate guarantee a check to me?
- No. It is the state's published materials-aid rate used to calculate district allotments. Benson's current request form describes materials on loan; its linked cash-reimbursement directions refer to 2024.
- Are Benson's health and counseling amounts extra materials money?
- No. They are separate service rates for district pupil health services and secondary guidance or counseling. Request those services using their own forms.
- Can I sign a new 2026-27 request after September 15?
- No. The state memo says parent requests after September 15 are ineligible for reimbursement. Late administrative reporting of a timely signed request can be considered only under extenuating circumstances the department approves.
- What current purchase window should I use for reimbursement?
- Benson has not published one. Its linked reimbursement instructions are from 2024, so ask the district office for the current dates and documentation rules before treating a purchase as reimbursable.
