Homeschool benefits: Lee's Summit and Lee's Summit R-7
Lee's Summit R-7 Policy JEA lets a homeschooled child attend district public school part time, as long as your child's total education meets Missouri's compulsory attendance law and your child is not enrolled full time in another public school. The policy names no tuition, and part-time enrollment starts with a call to your child's school building. Other options include college classes and scholarships.
Lee's Summit R-7 part-time homeschool public-school enrollment
Who qualifies
Homeschool covers the rest
Your child's total education, homeschool plus part-time classes, must meet Missouri's compulsory attendance law, which runs from age 7 to 17 or until 16 high school credits.
Not full time elsewhere
Your child cannot already be enrolled full time in another public school.
Lives in the district
Lee's Summit R-7 enrolls resident children and asks for proof of residency, proof of age, and immunization records.
Meets district procedures
The superintendent sets part-time enrollment procedures so part-time students do not jeopardize the district's discipline, health, and academic standards.
What the policy allows
The terms come from Lee's Summit R-7 Board Policy JEA, Compulsory and Part-Time Attendance, last revised June 19, 2014, and the district's enrollment page.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Missouri
No annual homeschool registration required. If withdrawing from public school, a written notice requesting removal from its rolls documents the change.
Missouri sets these rules:
- Subjects: For students under 16, offer at least 1,000 hours of instruction: 600 in reading, language arts, math, social studies, science, or related courses, including 400 at the regular homeschool location. The statutory hours and recordkeeping rules do not apply at age 16 or older.
- Testing: Missouri does not require standardized testing for homeschoolers.
- Records: For students under 16, keep a subject and activity record, a work-sample portfolio, and progress evaluations, or equivalent written or credible evidence.
- Teachers: No state teaching-license or degree requirement for a homeschool instructor.

Questions parents ask
- Can my homeschooled child take just a few classes at a Lee's Summit school?
- Yes. Policy JEA follows state law that allows part-time public school attendance when your child's total education meets compulsory attendance rules and your child is not full time in another public school.
- Does Lee's Summit R-7 charge tuition for part-time students?
- Not that the policy says. Policy JEA mentions no tuition or fees for resident part-time students, so ask your school building before you enroll.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
Local classes cover the subjects they offer. We teach the remaining subjects, so a local class can stay part of the year without becoming the whole curriculum.
