Homeschool reimbursement and benefits in New Jersey
Your homeschooled child can apply to your county’s shared-time vocational school and, once enrolled, receives district-paid tuition and eligible transportation as a public-school student. There is no fixed parent award; 2026-27 admission depends on county residency, space and the vocational school’s annual application process.
Who qualifies
County resident
You must live in the county whose vocational school receives your application.
Shared-time admission
The county school may accept your child when space is available under its nondiscriminatory policy.
Public-school route
Once enrolled, your child becomes a public-school student for this program; it is not a private homeschool spending account.
Transportation rules
The resident district supplies transportation services under N.J.S.A. 18A:39-1 and board policy; confirm distance and travel arrangements.

Local help in New Jersey
The local programs we have checked across the state cover college and dual credit, library resources, recreation, museums and arts, school services, other services, sports and activities, and grants and scholarships. Each local program sets its own rules for who qualifies. Search your ZIP code to see the ones that serve your address.
The state's homeschool rules
No routine annual notice. NJDOE identifies notice obligations after an unappealed denial of district enrollment and a transfer form when withdrawing an enrolled high-school student. A district may request documentation when credible evidence suggests noncompliance.
- Subjects: Provide instruction academically equivalent to the local public school for a child of similar grade and attainment. District curriculum approval is not required.
- Testing: New Jersey does not require standardized testing for homeschoolers.
- Records: No prescribed homeschool portfolio or routine reporting. Evidence of equivalent instruction is useful if a district requests documentation based on credible evidence of a compulsory-education violation.
- Teachers: No state teacher certification required for a parent or other person teaching at home.

Questions parents ask
- Will my child stay solely a homeschool student at a shared-time vocational school?
- No. Once enrolled in the shared-time vocational program, the student becomes a public-school student for that route.
- Is transportation to the shared-time vocational school included?
- Yes, subject to N.J.S.A. 18A:39-1 and the board’s rules and policy.
- Do we automatically get the nonpublic aid-in-lieu amount?
- No. Shared-time enrollment comes with transportation services, but the program sets no flat aid-in-lieu payment.
- Can we apply during 2026-27?
- Possibly. The county school decides current admission dates and whether space remains.
