Homeschool benefits: Rio Rancho Public Schools
Rio Rancho Public Schools (RRPS) lets a homeschooled student take up to three courses a year at one of its schools without changing the family's homeschooling status. It is meant for subjects outside your experience or resources; ask the district office how to register.
Who qualifies
Is a homeschool student
RRPS offers the courses to students who are homeschooled, and taking them does not change that status.

Your student can take up to three courses per year at one of the district's schools.
Registers through the district
The district page does not post the steps, so call the district office or your zoned school to ask which school, forms, and dates apply.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in New Mexico
You must notify the New Mexico Public Education Department within 30 days after establishing the home school, then renew on or before August 1 each subsequent year.
New Mexico sets these rules:
- Subjects: Instruction in New Mexico must include reading, language arts, math, social studies, and science.
- Testing: New Mexico does not require standardized testing for homeschoolers.
- Records: New Mexico requires you to keep disease-immunization records or a waiver. NMPED recommends keeping notices, instructional-hour records, materials, and work portfolios, but does not require those academic records.
- Teachers: The person providing instruction must have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Questions parents ask
- What kinds of RRPS courses make sense?
- Subjects outside your experience or beyond your resources at home. That is the purpose RRPS gives for the option.
- Can my child join sports or activities instead?
- Not through this option, which covers courses only. Ask the district office about activities; the page's separate activity rule is written for charter school students.
- How do we register for a course?
- Call the district office at 505-896-0667 or your zoned school.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
Local classes cover the subjects they offer. We teach the remaining subjects, so a local class can stay part of the year without becoming the whole curriculum.
$149/month per child after the trial.
