Homeschool benefits: Grand Forks Public School District 1
Grand Forks Public Schools coordinates district achievement testing for homeschooled students in grades 4, 6, 8, and 10 and provides special education service-plan forms. Your child can attend school events approved by the principal at your resident school; this is not unrestricted access to every activity.
Who qualifies
Submits annual home education forms
The district asks home education families to submit a Statement of Intent each year, including the testing decision and any need for monitoring. Provide the listed identity, immunization, and parent-qualification records, updating them as needed.
Requests the district testing option
For a child in grade 4, 6, 8, or 10, complete the district’s Standardized Testing Form if you want to use its testing. The state education department confirms that districts pay for their selected test and its administration.
Arranges a service plan when applicable
The district provides a Service Plan for Home Education and a progress report template. Its form identifies the parent as responsible for developing the plan and records possible public-school services and parent responsibilities.
Gets approval for school events
Contact the principal of your resident school about events your child can attend. The page limits participation to events that the administration approves for that school.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in North Dakota
You must file a Statement of Intent with the resident district superintendent at least five days before beginning, or within 14 days of establishing residence in the district. You must file again each year for a child of compulsory school age.
North Dakota sets these rules:
- Subjects: Teach the subjects required for public-school students at the same level. Provide at least four hours of instruction per day for at least 175 days each year.
- Testing: Test in grades 4, 6, 8, and 10 unless a statutory exemption applies. File any exemption notice and supporting documentation with the annual Statement of Intent.
- Records: Keep yearly records of courses, progress, and test results. File required test results with the superintendent. Provide records on request after a public-school transfer.
- Teachers: The supervising parent or legal guardian needs a high-school diploma or GED, or monitoring by a licensed or approved teacher for the first two years, with an extension when required by the child’s test results.

Questions parents ask
- Do we pay for the Grand Forks district test?
- No. North Dakota's official parent guide says the district pays for its selected test and administration. If you choose a different nationally normed test, you pay and a licensed teacher must administer it.
- Can my child attend any Grand Forks school event?
- No. Call your resident school’s principal about possible events; only those approved by that school’s administration are available through the process described.
- Who helps with a special education service plan?
- The district's plan form separates potential public-school services from parent responsibilities and also permits a parent to decline district services.
- Who should I contact about annual paperwork?
- Bailee Audette at the district office, at 701-746-2200, extension 7115, or baudette170@mygfschools.org.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
Local classes cover the subjects they offer. We teach the remaining subjects, so a local class can stay part of the year without becoming the whole curriculum.
$149/month per child after the trial.
