Homeschool benefits: Grand Valley Local School District
Grand Valley Local Schools lets home-educated students who live in the district play on its interscholastic athletic teams. Before the season begins, file your Home Education Notification with the superintendent, proof of residence, a physical from the last year, and proof your student passed five courses in the last grading period.

Meets OHSAA rules
Your student must meet every Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and district requirement, and may need extra paperwork if starting after the fall of the freshman year.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Ohio
You must notify the resident district superintendent within five calendar days after beginning home education, moving into a district, or withdrawing from school, and notify annually by August 30.
Ohio sets these rules:
- Subjects: Provide instruction in English language arts, mathematics, science, history, government, and social studies.
- Testing: Ohio's current home-education law does not require an annual standardized test or academic assessment filing.
- Records: Keep copies of each notice and the superintendent's acknowledgment; the state does not require a routine portfolio submission.
- Teachers: Ohio's current home-education statute does not impose the former diploma-or-supervision requirement.

Questions parents ask
- Can I bring a copy of the birth certificate?
- No. The district needs the original birth certificate, passport, visa, or green card, and it does not accept hospital birth records.
- My student is starting as a sophomore. Is that a problem?
- It can mean extra paperwork. Athletes who first play after the fall of their freshman year may need to file forms with the district and the OHSAA to confirm eligibility.
