Homeschool rules and statewide help in Rhode Island
You must seek approval from local school committee.
Rhode Island sets these rules:
- Subjects: Provide instruction in English in reading, writing, geography, arithmetic, US and Rhode Island history, American government, civics, health, and physical education. Instruction must be thorough and efficient.
- Testing: Agree on an evaluation method with the local school committee during approval. Rhode Island does not prescribe a single statewide annual homeschool test.
- Records: Keep attendance records and return them to the local school committee. Provide progress reports or evaluations as agreed during approval.
- Teachers: Rhode Island does not require a teaching certificate or degree to homeschool your own child.

Questions parents ask
- Can my child play Little Compton school sports?
- Yes. Partially enrolled home-schooled students can join clubs, extracurricular activities, and school athletics as determined by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.
- Will the district drive my child to class?
- No. Little Compton does not provide special transportation for partially enrolled home-schooled students, and your child stays on campus only for class times or public events.
- Can my child take state tests?
- Yes. Approved home-instruction students can take part in all state and local assessments by arrangement with the district.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
Local classes cover the subjects they offer. We teach the remaining subjects, so a local class can stay part of the year without becoming the whole curriculum.
$149/month per child after the trial.
