Homeschool benefits: Bowie County and Texarkana College
The Texarkana College Promise pays whatever tuition is left after grants and scholarships for up to 60 credit hours or an associate degree, worth up to $5,940 at the $99 in-district rate. Homeschool seniors in the Texarkana College service area qualify with a 2.5 GPA on their sixth-semester transcript or 15 Texarkana College credit hours, and Class of 2027 applications are due February 5, 2027.
Who qualifies
Graduates in the service area
Texarkana College lists graduating seniors from public, private, and homeschool programs in its service area as eligible. Ask the college if you are unsure your address counts.
Meets the GPA or credit bar
Your student needs a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the sixth-semester transcript, or 15 or more college credit hours earned with Texarkana College before graduation, which also brings an automatic extra $1,000 award.
Enrolls full time that fall
Your student starts with 12 or more credit hours in the fall right after graduation. Nursing students may take fewer hours.
Files the FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is due by June 1, 2027, before enrollment, since grants pay first.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Texas
You do not have to file a homeschool notice to the state.
Texas sets these rules:
- Subjects: Instruction in Texas must include reading, spelling, grammar, math, and good citizenship.
- Testing: No routine annual homeschool standardized test is required. UIL participation and public-school transfer can have separate testing requirements.
- Records: Texas does not require homeschool records, but keeping them is recommended.
- Teachers: Texas does not require homeschool parents to hold a teaching certificate.
Texas also has an education savings account that home-educated students can use.
- The Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) awards $2,000 a year to selected home-education students for approved expenses. Applications for 2026-27 closed March 31, 2026; families who missed that cycle can join the 2027-28 interest list.

Questions parents ask
- Which homeschool record shows the 2.5 GPA for the Texarkana College Promise?
- The sixth-semester high school transcript, which your student uploads with the admission application. The GPA on it must be at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Will we still pay anything?
- Yes. The Promise covers tuition only, so you pay for books and all fees.
- What if my student drops a class?
- Your student can drop or fail one class and be placed on probation. A second time ends the scholarship, though one appeal is allowed if eligibility is lost.
- Who handles financial aid questions?
- Financial Aid Office Manager Tiffany Pumphrey answers FAFSA questions at 903-823-3163.
