Homeschool benefits and savings in Pasadena
Pasadena Parks and Recreation scholarships pay up to $100 per person each fiscal year, up to $400 per household, toward city recreation programs and memberships. City of Pasadena residents under the income limit qualify, such as a family of four earning under $50,550, and the rules do not mention school enrollment, so a homeschooled child qualifies the same way.

What it is worth
Pasadena's scholarship application gives $100 per person per fiscal year, with a household maximum that depends on size.
- 1 person
- $100
- 2 people
- $200
- 3 people
- $300
- 4 or more people
- $400
The amounts are maximums, not a guarantee. Awards follow the city budget year, October 1 to September 30, and when money is short, children under 18 get priority over adults.

Awards expire September 30 with the city budget year, so apply again for the next one.
What it pays for
Covered
- Pasadena Parks and Recreation programs
- Recreation memberships
Not covered
- Families outside Pasadena city limits
- Applications filed for other people's children
Scholarship money is limited each budget year and split 80% for youth and 20% for adults, so approval depends on funds left when you apply.

The Recreation Division takes scholarship applications at the city's recreation centers and answers questions about eligible programs.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Texas
You do not have to file a homeschool notice to the state.
Texas sets these rules:
- Subjects: Instruction in Texas must include reading, spelling, grammar, math, and good citizenship.
- Testing: No routine annual homeschool standardized test is required. UIL participation and public-school transfer can have separate testing requirements.
- Records: Texas does not require homeschool records, but keeping them is recommended.
- Teachers: Texas does not require homeschool parents to hold a teaching certificate.
Texas also has an education savings account that home-educated students can use.
- The Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) awards $2,000 a year to selected home-education students for approved expenses. Applications for 2026-27 closed March 31, 2026; families who missed that cycle can join the 2027-28 interest list.

Questions parents ask
- When do we need to reapply for a Pasadena Parks scholarship?
- Each October 1.
- What if we cannot provide pay stubs or tax forms for a Pasadena scholarship?
- You can write a Letter of Request explaining why a scholarship is warranted and why the usual documents are not available. The Superintendent of Recreation decides those requests.
- Can I apply for my nephew or a neighbor's child?
- No. An adult may apply only for themselves and their own dependent children.
- Does approval guarantee a place in the program?
- No. Approval does not reserve money or a spot, and awards stop once the fund is empty.
