Homeschool benefits: King George County Public Schools
King George County Public Schools (KGCS) lets home-instructed and private school students in grades K-12 apply to attend classes part time. Apply through the Office of Student and Family Services before July 15 for fall or, in grades 9-12, before December 1 for spring; religious-exemption students cannot use this route.
Who qualifies
Meets home instruction rules
Your child must be in compliance with Virginia home instruction requirements, starting with a Notice of Intent filed by August 15, or be enrolled in a private school.
Not under religious exemption
Students approved under a religious exemption cannot enroll part time or take part in KGCS testing opportunities.
Applies through the district office
Only the Office of Student and Family Services processes applications. Schools and teachers cannot enroll a student part time.
Space and resources allow
Decisions depend in part on available resources and class sizes, so acceptance may not come until the week before the semester starts.

Good to know
Withdraw before applying for part time
An enrolled child can switch only after withdrawing. File a Notice of Intent to withdraw to home instruction first, then apply. Your child cannot stay enrolled, attend class, or join school activities while the application is pending.
Your child cannot play on a high school team
Home instruction students, including part-time students, are not eligible for athletics under Virginia High School League (VHSL) guidelines.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Virginia
You must file the annual notice of intent by August 15. If you move into a Virginia division or begin after the school year starts, notify the division as soon as practicable and complete the filing within 30 days of the notice.
Virginia sets these rules:
- Subjects: Provide a curriculum and include a list of the coming year’s subjects with the annual notice. The home-instruction statute does not require the public-school curriculum.
- Testing: Submit evidence of progress by August 1 after the school year. Children under six on September 30 of that school year are exempt from this assessment requirement.
- Records: Submit the annual notice, subject list, proof of a qualifying route, and required evidence of progress. Keep copies; no routine portfolio or attendance-log filing is required.
- Teachers: Qualify through a high-school diploma, Board-prescribed teaching qualifications, providing a curriculum or program of study, or evidence that you can provide an adequate education.

Questions parents ask
- What if we miss the KGCS deadline?
- Your application may still be considered. Applications that arrive after the deadline and through the first week of school are reviewed as space and resources allow.
- Can my homeschooler join JROTC?
- Yes. Home school and private school students in grades 9-12 who live in King George County can apply for part-time enrollment in the King George High School JROTC unit.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
Local classes cover the subjects they offer. We teach the remaining subjects, so a local class can stay part of the year without becoming the whole curriculum.
$149/month per child after the trial.
