Homeschool benefits and savings in Spotsylvania County
Spotsylvania County Public Schools (SCPS) lets homeschooled students sit for the digital PSAT/NMSQT for $12.50 and the SAT School Day for $42.00 at a county high school. For fall 2026 the tests are October 20 and October 27, but registration closed earlier in the fall, so plan to register next August or September.

SCPS invites students in the homeschool community to its fall PSAT/NMSQT and SAT School Day sessions.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Virginia
You must file the annual notice of intent by August 15. If you move into a Virginia division or begin after the school year starts, notify the division as soon as practicable and complete the filing within 30 days of the notice.
Virginia sets these rules:
- Subjects: Provide a curriculum and include a list of the coming year’s subjects with the annual notice. The home-instruction statute does not require the public-school curriculum.
- Testing: Submit evidence of progress by August 1 after the school year. Children under six on September 30 of that school year are exempt from this assessment requirement.
- Records: Submit the annual notice, subject list, proof of a qualifying route, and required evidence of progress. Keep copies; no routine portfolio or attendance-log filing is required.
- Teachers: Qualify through a high-school diploma, Board-prescribed teaching qualifications, providing a curriculum or program of study, or evidence that you can provide an adequate education.

Questions parents ask
- Can we still sign up for SCPS testing in October 2026?
- No. The latest 2026 deadline, October 9 for the SAT, has passed. The 2026 notices went out in mid-August, so check with your assigned high school then for next year's dates.
- Why does the PSAT matter for a junior?
- For juniors, the PSAT/NMSQT is the official qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, and it gives feedback on readiness for AP courses.
- How do we pay?
- At Chancellor High School, pay by cash or check made out to "CHHS" when you turn in the registration form.
- Who handles testing accommodations?
- College Board Services for Students with Disabilities. Homeschool families request accommodations directly from College Board, not through the school.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
Local classes cover the subjects they offer. We teach the remaining subjects, so a local class can stay part of the year without becoming the whole curriculum.
$149/month per child after the trial.
