Homeschool benefits: Teton County School District 1

Teton County School District #1 (TCSD) lets homeschooled students take the Wyoming Test of Proficiency and Progress (WY-TOPP), the state test it gives up to three times a year, when a parent asks. Tell the district's assessment coordinator you want to take part, and TCSD will contact you in the spring to set a time and place.

Who qualifies

  1. Is homeschooled

TCSD says home school students are eligible to take the WY-TOPP upon request. The district also asks homeschool families to complete its homeschool form and submit it to TCSD.

  2. Asks the district

Contact Stephen Prange, TCSD #1 Assessment Coordinator, to request testing and ask about the schedule.

  3. Is in a tested grade

English language arts and math cover kindergarten through grade 10, writing covers grades 3, 5, 7, and 9, and science covers grades 4, 8, and 10.

Tests by grade

TCSD's home school page lists how often each grade takes the WY-TOPP.

The page does not mention a fee or say whether homeschool students sit for every session or only the spring one, so ask the assessment coordinator when you request testing.

How to request testing

  1. When you start homeschooling

    Submit the homeschool form

Complete TCSD's homeschool form, linked with its Homeschooling Policy IHBG, and submit it to the district.

  2. Before spring

    Request testing

Email sprange@tcsd.org or call 307-732-9423 to say your child will take the WY-TOPP.

  3. In the spring

    Get the time and place

TCSD notifies participating families in the spring, before testing, to set up when and where your child tests.

  4. After testing

    Read the scores

Scores come back soon after testing, but the Wyoming Department of Education's growth reports arrive only in August.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Wyoming

To withdraw a child under 18, a parent, guardian, or other responsible person must meet in person with a school counselor or administrator and give written consent. This does not apply if the district was already told the child will enroll in another district, a private school, or a home-based program. Since July 1, 2025, families no longer submit curriculum to the district.

Wyoming sets these rules:

Wyoming also has an education savings account that home-educated students can use.

Questions parents ask

When will we know where to go for TCSD testing?
In the spring, before testing. The district contacts participating families then to arrange the time and place.
How is the WY-TOPP scored?
Writing is scored by artificial intelligence, and math, language arts, and science are scored by computer.
Does the WY-TOPP cost anything?
Not that TCSD lists.
Can my homeschooled teen also join high school activities?
Ask the activities director. TCSD directs homeschool families interested in Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA) activities to Ryan Allen, Jackson Hole High School Activities Director, at rallen@tcsd.org.
