Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Alaska
Alaska homeschoolers can play public school sports through an alternative education program: a statewide correspondence school, a charter school, or an accredited home school program.
How homeschool participation works
Alaska Statute 14.30.365 opens school sports to students in alternative education programs, and the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) writes the eligibility rules. State law counts three kinds of program: a statewide correspondence school, a charter school, and a home school program accredited by a recognized accrediting body.
Most families who teach at home in Alaska do it through a district correspondence program, so their children are public school students learning at home and qualify on that basis. An independent homeschool, run outside any program, qualifies only if it is accredited by the one body the Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) recognizes for home school programs.
Taking a few classes part time at a public school does not, by itself, open a sports path.
Rules that decide participation
School of eligibility
Your child plays for the public school whose attendance area includes your home. Another school is possible when your child shows good cause and that school's governing body approves.
Credits and grades
Your child is enrolled in courses worth at least 2.5 units of semester credit and passed at least 2.5 units with an overall 2.0 grade point average the previous semester.
Physical and semester limit
Your child has a sports physical from the past 18 months and has used no more than eight consecutive semesters since first entering grade 9.
Before the season
First step
Ask the athletic director at your attendance-area school what records the school needs from your program to show last semester's credits and grades.
When to start
Start before the season's first practice, so last semester's credits and grades are on file when the season opens.
School that fits around the season
Lessons start at your child's level and go wherever practice and travel do. We grade the work as it is submitted and keep the grades and transcript a school or league may ask to see.
$149/month per child after the trial.
