Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Colorado

Yes. Colorado law gives homeschooled children equal access to public school activities, sports included, at a school the district picks in the district that received your notice or the district where you live.

How homeschool participation works

Section 22-32-116.5 of the Colorado Revised Statutes requires districts to let a child in a home-based education program take part in activities on an equal basis with enrolled students. The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) runs high school athletics, and its rules apply to homeschoolers the same way they apply to everyone.

The district chooses the school. It weighs which school offers the most of the activities your child wants, which is nearest, and your preference. When neither district offers the activity, your child may play in a neighboring district or at the nearest school that offers it.

A school cannot require a homeschooler to enroll in a course in order to play, unless the activity extends a course, such as a performing arts group. Private schools may admit homeschoolers to their teams at their own discretion.

Rules that decide participation

  1. Homeschool law and eligibility rules

Your child follows Colorado's homeschool law and meets the school's eligibility rules and CHSAA's, as enrolled athletes do.

  2. Reserved team spots

A district may reserve some team spots for its enrolled students.

  3. Fee cap

The participation fee cannot exceed 150 percent of the fee an enrolled student pays.

  4. Withdrawing during the year

A child withdrawn from a public school more than 15 days into the school year stays with the former school for activities for the rest of that year.

Before the season

  1. First step

Send the district a copy of your notice of intent and ask which school it assigns for the sport your child wants.

  2. When to start

Start well before the first practice, because the district has to assign a school before your child can join the team.
