Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Delaware
No. A Delaware homeschooler cannot play for the public school in the family's attendance zone, because athletic association rules require a student to be legally enrolled at the member school the student represents.
Why homeschoolers cannot play today
The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) sets eligibility for school sports. Its Regulation 1028, on enrollment and attendance, makes legal enrollment in the member school a condition for trying out, practicing, scrimmaging, and competing. The Department of Education's homeschool guidance describes the same rule as full-time enrollment at a DIAA member school.
The 2026 study law
House Bill 350, signed July 23, 2026, directs the Department of Education to study whether homeschool students should join public school extracurricular activities, athletic competitions included, possibly through a pilot program. The department works with school districts, charter and vocational-technical schools, and homeschool community representatives. The law does not open any team to homeschoolers on its own.
Rules that decide participation
Member school enrollment
A student must be legally enrolled in the DIAA member school the student plays for, so a student taught only at home is not eligible.
Enrollment rule waivers
A waiver request needs the superintendent's or head of school's approval before DIAA reviews it. Even with a waiver, the school decides whether the student can play, and DIAA cannot authorize play at a school where the student is not enrolled.
Before the season
First step
If your child wants to play school sports now, ask the school about full-time enrollment; otherwise look to club and recreation teams.
When to start
The department's findings and recommendations under House Bill 350 are due by December 31, 2027; any change to eligibility would come after that.
