Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Hawaii
No. A Hawaii homeschooler cannot play for the home public school, because Hawaii High School Athletic Association rules make enrollment at the school a condition of eligibility, and no state law or rule makes an exception.
Why homeschoolers cannot play today
The Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) runs high school sports statewide. Its administrative regulations tie eligibility to enrollment at the school: before the HHSAA start date for winter and spring sports, and within a set window after school opens for fall sports. A state tournament player must have been enrolled at a member school for 21 days before the first tournament contest.
The state homeschool rules point the same way. The parent who files the homeschool notice is responsible for the child's total educational program, athletics and other co-curricular activities included. Because the Department of Education is one statewide district, the answer is the same on every island.
Rules that decide participation
School enrollment
A student must be enrolled at the member school, with the enrollment deadline for the season met, to try out and compete.
Home public school
An enrolled student plays at the home public school, at the first private school where the student played, or at a school where the student has not played that sport in the previous or current year.
Before the season
First step
If your child wants to play school sports, plan full-time enrollment before the season's enrollment deadline; otherwise choose club and community programs.
When to start
For a fall sport, enrollment must be complete within 15 days after the first day of school.
