Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Kansas
Yes. Kansas law says a student in a nonpublic school, homeschools included, shall be permitted to take part in any activity a district offers under the state activities association, at the school whose attendance area covers the student's home.
How homeschool participation works
K.S.A. 72-7121 sets the right, and the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) regulates the activities. Districts and KSHSAA may not discriminate against a student because of where the student is enrolled.
A homeschooler meets the same age, eligibility, fee, and tryout rules as other students. A district may require a course to take part only if every participant has to take it.
A Kansas homeschool is registered as a nonaccredited private school, and that registration is what makes your child a nonpublic school student under the law.
Rules that decide participation
Academic eligibility
Your child is making satisfactory progress toward the next grade, and the parent or teacher submits an affidavit or transcript saying so to KSHSAA. Your child then stays eligible for that activity season.
Leaving public school
A student who leaves public school for homeschool is not fully eligible right away under KSHSAA's academic rules, unless the student was eligible on the day of withdrawal and keeps playing for the same school.
Before the season
First step
Ask the activities director at the school that serves your address for the KSHSAA affidavit form and the tryout dates.
When to start
Submit the affidavit or transcript before the season, since it covers your child for the whole season once accepted.
School that fits around the season
Lessons start at your child's level and go wherever practice and travel do. We grade the work as it is submitted and keep the grades and transcript a school or league may ask to see.
