Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Missouri

Yes. Since a 2025 law, Missouri school districts and charter schools must let home school students try out for and join their athletics and other activities, at the district or charter school that serves the family's address.

How homeschool participation works

Senate Bill 63, now section 167.790 of the Missouri statutes, covers athletics, fine arts, and related activities. The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) changed its rules to match in August 2025.

A school cannot require a home school student to attend its classes in order to take part. The exception is coursework built into an activity, such as some fine arts programs and career and technical student organizations.

Under the law, the parent oversees the student's academic standards.

A student who leaves a public school while academically or behaviorally ineligible cannot take part in that district's activities for 12 months, so withdrawing does not reset a suspension.

Rules that decide participation

  1. Same rules as enrolled students

Your child meets the same conduct, physical, fee, and residence rules the school applies to its enrolled students.

Before the season

  1. First step

Tell the activities director at the school that serves your address which activity your child wants, and ask for the school's participation forms and physical requirements.

  2. When to start

Start before tryouts, so the physical and the school's forms are done when the season opens.
