Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Montana
Yes. Montana law bars a school district or athletic association from keeping a home school student out of activities at a school in the resident district because the student is not enrolled or does not attend enough hours.
How homeschool participation works
Section 20-5-112 of the Montana Code Annotated (MCA), passed in 2021 and amended in 2025, covers extracurricular activities, sports included. It applies to the school district and to any athletic association, conference, or organization with authority over interscholastic sports, which includes the Montana High School Association.
A home school student who takes part is held to the same participation standards as full-time students at the school and to the same rules of the interscholastic organization the school belongs to.
The law changes how academic eligibility is shown. Instead of school report cards, the person who teaches your child attests in writing that your child is academically eligible, and the principal verifies that attestation. The verification may not include any form of student assessment.
Rules that decide participation
Home school law met
Your home school meets the requirements of MCA 20-5-109, including notice to the county superintendent, records, instruction time, and the required subject areas.
Resident district
Your child takes part at a school in the district where you live.
Citizenship and residency
A district or association may limit participation based on your child's United States citizenship or Montana residency.
Before the season
First step
Ask the athletic director at your resident school which form the principal signs for your written academic attestation, and what else enrolled players turn in.
When to start
Settle the attestation and the school's registration forms before the first practice; the law sets no separate homeschool deadline.
School that fits around the season
Lessons start at your child's level and go wherever practice and travel do. We grade the work as it is submitted and keep the grades and transcript a school or league may ask to see.
$149/month per child after the trial.
