Homeschool Sports Eligibility in New York
No. New York's regulations require a student in interscholastic sports to be enrolled in the public school, so a home-instructed student cannot play on public school teams.
Why homeschoolers cannot play
Commissioner's Regulation 135.4(c)(7) says a participant in interscholastic sports must be enrolled in the public school. Because the rule is the state's, no district can make an exception, and New York City likewise says homeschooled students do not have access to most school programs, sports included.
Clubs are different. Under Regulation 135.1, children educated other than at the public school may take part in school-sponsored club activities, and the State Education Department (NYSED) recommends that each board of education adopt a policy allowing it.
Rules that decide participation
Enrolling ends home instruction
The only path onto a school team is full enrollment, which ends home instruction for the year.

Ask your district whether its board has a policy letting home-instructed students join school-sponsored clubs.
