Homeschool Sports Eligibility in South Carolina
Yes. South Carolina's Equal Access to Interscholastic Activities Act bars a district from denying a home school student the chance to play sports and join other interscholastic activities at the school whose attendance area includes the family's home.
How homeschool participation works
S.C. Code 59-63-100 covers athletics, music, speech, and other extracurricular activities, and it applies to children taught under any of the state's three home schooling options.
The district's eligibility requirements apply, apart from its school attendance and enrollment rules, and the student meets the same standards of behavior, performance, practice, and team selection as other students.
The law also stops a district from contracting with an organization that runs interscholastic activities if that organization bars home school students, so league membership cannot be used to keep your child off a team.
Rules that decide participation
A full year at home
Your child has been taught under one of the three home schooling options for a full academic year before taking part.
Written notice
You notify the district superintendent in writing before the season begins.
Leaving while ineligible
A public school student who could not keep academic eligibility cannot play as a home school student the following semester.
Before the season
First step
Write to the district superintendent before the season, naming your child, the activity, and your home schooling option.
When to start
Send the notice before the season begins. A family new to homeschooling waits a full academic year before the first season.
School that fits around the season
Lessons start at your child's level and go wherever practice and travel do. We grade the work as it is submitted and keep the grades and transcript a school or league may ask to see.
$149/month per child after the trial.
