Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Vermont
Yes. Every Vermont school board must open its schools to home study students, and the Agency of Education lists athletics among the activities they may join, as space permits, at the schools in your home district.
How homeschool participation works
The duty comes from 16 V.S.A. 563(24). It covers enrollment in courses, cocurricular and extracurricular activities, and use of school facilities, so a team is one of several ways your child can take part.
Your child follows the same enrollment procedures, deadlines, and capacity limits as full-time students. When a team or activity has a waiting list, the school applies the same selection criteria to everyone. Because each board writes its own policy, the student handbook for your district carries the details.
Rules that decide participation
A home study enrollment
Your child is enrolled in home study through the Agency of Education, which confirms the enrollment by email and then by letter.
Room on the team
Participation is open as space permits, under the same tryout and roster rules full-time students face.
Before the season
First step
Ask the principal or athletic director for the district's home study policy and the sign-up date for the season.
When to start
Sign up by the same deadline the school sets for its full-time students.
School that fits around the season
Lessons start at your child's level and go wherever practice and travel do. We grade the work as it is submitted and keep the grades and transcript a school or league may ask to see.
$149/month per child after the trial.
