Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Virginia
No. The Virginia High School League does not let home-instructed students play for a member school, because they do not meet its rule that a player be a regular, full-time student.
Why homeschoolers cannot play
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) runs public high school sports and academic competitions. Its handbook says home school students are not eligible because they do not meet its bona fide student rule, which requires a regular, full-time student in good standing.
Because the rule asks for a full-time student, taking a few classes at the high school part time does not make a homeschooler eligible either.
Virginia has no law that overrides those rules for homeschoolers. Clubs and activities outside VHSL, such as a school's own clubs, follow each school board's policy instead.
Rules that decide participation
If your child enrolls later
VHSL counts home instruction as school enrollment for its transfer rule, which looks at where the family lives, and for its scholarship rule, which requires passing five academic subjects in the previous semester.
Before the season
First step
If your teen plans to enroll for a future season, plan the move for the start of a semester.
When to start
A student who enrolls has to be enrolled by the fifteenth school day of the semester to play that semester.
School that fits around the season
Lessons start at your child's level and go wherever practice and travel do. We grade the work as it is submitted and keep the grades and transcript a school or league may ask to see.
