Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Wisconsin

Yes. Wisconsin law requires the school board where you live to let your homeschooled child play interscholastic athletics in the district on the same basis and to the same extent as enrolled students.

How homeschool participation works

Wis. Stat. 118.133 covers any child who lives in the district and is enrolled in a home-based private educational program, the state's legal name for a homeschool. The same rule opens extracurricular activities such as clubs, band, and drama.

If the board asks, your program gives it a written statement that your child meets the board's requirements for age and for academic and disciplinary records. The board may not question that statement or ask for more information. The law also forbids anyone from giving a false statement, so write it only when your child truly meets those requirements.

Rules that decide participation

  1. A resident homeschooler

Your child lives in the district, and you have filed this year's PI-1206, the home-based program form the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) collects each year.

  2. Records behind the statement

Keep your child's age, academic, and discipline records current, since the statement rests on them.

Before the season

  1. First step

Ask the athletic director for the season's sign-up date and whether the board wants the written statement.

  2. What can rule a player out

The board may charge participation fees, including for uniforms, equipment, and musical instruments, on the same basis it charges enrolled students.

  3. When to start

Sign up by the school's deadline for the season. The PI-1206 is due on or before October 15 each year.
