Homeschool Sports Eligibility in Wyoming
Yes. A Wyoming school district must let a school-age child who lives in the district and is not enrolled there full time, a homeschooler included, take part in any district activity, sports included.
How homeschool participation works
W.S. 21-4-506 sets the right, and it covers sports sanctioned by the Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA). WHSAA calls homeschooled participants affiliate members.
The district may charge WHSAA fees and its own participation fee, but no more than full-time students pay, and it may not charge tuition. All other district and WHSAA rules apply, and the home school program must meet the state's homeschool law. Wyoming has no homeschool registration, so there is no registration for the district to check.
Rules that decide participation
Yearly affiliate application
Each year, before the season's first practice, the family applies to WHSAA and pays a $100 fee per home school, a catastrophic insurance fee, and the activity fee.
Academic eligibility
Your child shows academic eligibility with a composite score at the 25th percentile or higher on a nationally norm-referenced achievement test, good for one calendar year, or with grades from a teacher who meets WHSAA's rules.
Before the season
First step
Ask the district's activities director for the WHSAA affiliate member application, and schedule a norm-referenced test if your child has no score from the past year.
When to start
Finish the application, fees, and test score before the season's first practice, every year.
School that fits around the season
Lessons start at your child's level and go wherever practice and travel do. We grade the work as it is submitted and keep the grades and transcript a school or league may ask to see.
$149/month per child after the trial.
