What the state and school provide

Filing a home instruction notice is free, and the Department of Education says parents bear all other costs. The local school may lend textbooks when it has extra copies, but it does not have to supply workbooks, lesson plans, or computers, and Maine Learning Technology Initiative laptops are not available to home instruction students.

A homeschooler may use school facilities and equipment on the same basis as enrolled students when the principal approves, the use relates to the student's academic program, and it costs the school unit nothing extra. School library books are available under similar conditions.

In a school unit with no school for your child's grade, tuition for classes or activities in another unit falls on the family or on the resident unit, under local policy.
