Homeschool Tax Deductions and Credits in Michigan

No. Michigan has no homeschool tax credit or deduction, and no public funds go to homeschooling families.

What families pay for

Michigan's income tax has no line for homeschool expenses. When a homeschooled student takes a nonessential elective at the public school through shared time, the district receives the state funding for that class; the parents are not compensated.

Shared-time classes are open to homeschooled and state-approved nonpublic school students in kindergarten through grade 12 in subjects such as physical education, art, foreign language, music, driver's education, computer science, career and technical education, and Advanced Placement. Core subjects are not offered this way.

Michigan Achievement Scholarship

After high school, the Michigan Achievement Scholarship is open to homeschooled students if the college accepts the homeschool documents as proof of high school completion in 2023 or later. It can provide up to $27,500 toward a Michigan public university, private college, or community college bachelor's program, and its Skills Scholarship pays up to $2,000 a year for up to two years of career training.

Who qualifies

  1. Residency and timing

Your child has lived in Michigan for at least the preceding year and enrolls within 15 months of finishing high school.

  2. Application

The college award requires a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); the career training award has no FAFSA requirement.

Applying and paying

  1. First step

Budget homeschool costs as family spending, and before senior year ask the colleges your child is considering whether they accept your homeschool documents for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship.

  2. What can rule you out

A student who already holds an associate or bachelor's degree, or a credential paid for by the Skills Scholarship, cannot receive it.

  3. When to apply or file

File the FAFSA during your child's senior year.

Teaching that takes the work off you

We teach every subject starting at your child's level, grade the work as it is submitted, and keep the attendance, grades, and transcript, so homeschooling asks less of your time.
