Homeschool Tax Deductions and Credits in Utah

Yes. The Utah Fits All Scholarship gives a home-based student up to $4,000 a year at ages 5 to 11, or up to $6,000 at ages 12 to 18, under Utah Code 53F-6-402, subject to legislative funding.

How the scholarship account works

The program pays into an account the parent spends on approved education expenses. The age that sets a home-based student's amount is the age on September 1 of the scholarship year, and private school students can receive up to $8,000.

Funds reach the account in two equal payments, by July 31 and by December 31. There is no application fee. A parent may not receive funds as payment for time spent teaching their own child.

When applications exceed funding, awards go first to returning students who submitted their accountability measure, then to siblings of current users, then to certain lower-income students in partly funded households, and then by lottery.

In April 2025, the Third District Court ruled the program unconstitutional. The Utah Supreme Court granted the state's request for an interlocutory appeal, and the program took 2026-27 applications.

Utah has no homeschool tax credit or deduction.

Who qualifies

  1. Apply each year

You apply for an initial scholarship or renewal for every school year you want funds.

  2. Portfolio or assessment

To renew, you deliver a portfolio of your child's year or results from an assessment by May 31, or on a schedule the program manager approves.

  3. Income consent

You authorize the State Tax Commission to share your state income tax information with the program manager for income verification.

Applying and paying

  1. First step

Watch for the 2027-28 application window, which opened March 1 for returning students and April 1 for new students last cycle.

  2. What can rule you out

Taking an account means you accept full financial responsibility for your child's education, and it counts as refusing consent to special education services under federal law. You must tell the program manager within five business days if your child returns to a public school.

  3. What you still pay

The account covers approved expenses up to the award amount. Anything above it is yours.

  4. When to apply or file

For 2026-27, new-student applications closed May 1, 2026, and the renewal portfolio or assessment is due May 31.
