Homeschool benefits and savings in Montclair
Montclair Recreation takes 50% or 25% off its program fees and pool passes for families with low incomes. Without a school lunch letter, a homeschool family qualifies by sending last year's income tax form, which the office checks against HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) income guidelines. Other options include college classes and scholarships.

Who qualifies
Meets the income guideline
Families without a Montclair Board of Education lunch letter qualify for 25% or 50% off based on HUD guidelines applied to the past year's income tax form.
Sends last year's tax form
A homeschool family will not have a school lunch approval letter, so attach your past year's income tax form to the family application instead.

Montclair asks families to get the discount approved before registering for any program. For many families, the discount ended January 2, 2026, so returning families update their paperwork.

Homeschool rules and statewide help in New Jersey
No routine annual notice. NJDOE identifies notice obligations after an unappealed denial of district enrollment and a transfer form when withdrawing an enrolled high-school student. A district may request documentation when credible evidence suggests noncompliance.
New Jersey sets these rules:
- Subjects: Provide instruction academically equivalent to the local public school for a child of similar grade and attainment. District curriculum approval is not required.
- Testing: New Jersey does not require standardized testing for homeschoolers.
- Records: No prescribed homeschool portfolio or routine reporting. Evidence of equivalent instruction is useful if a district requests documentation based on credible evidence of a compulsory-education violation.
- Teachers: No state teacher certification required for a parent or other person teaching at home.

Questions parents ask
- We homeschool, so there is no school lunch letter. Can we still apply for Montclair assistance?
- Yes. Montclair accepts your past year's income tax form in place of the Board of Education letter and sets your discount by HUD income guidelines.
- Where do we send the Montclair application?
- Email the application and your tax form to Recreation staff, such as mjreaves@montclairnjusa.org, or fax them to 973-744-1947.
- What transcript should a homeschooled student send to Essex County College?
- The transcript you keep for your student. The college asks for the latest high school transcript and describes no separate homeschool version, so ask the Pre-College Readiness Office if it needs anything more.
