Homeschool benefits and savings in Oconomowoc
Oconomowoc Area School District lets a homeschooled student take up to two district courses a semester and join school athletics and activities on the same terms as enrolled students. You pay the same participation fees district families pay, such as $160 a year for high school athletics in 2026-27. Other options include college classes and scholarships.
Oconomowoc home-based private education shared-time access
Who qualifies
Receives home-based private education
Wisconsin calls homeschooling a home-based private educational program. Board policy 9270 gives students in that kind of program the course, athletics, and activity rights described here.
Meets each course's standards
Your child must meet the district's minimum standards for enrollment in each course, the same standards enrolled students meet.
Stays within two courses
The two-course limit per semester includes any course your child takes in another public school district that semester.
Can document athletic eligibility
If the district asks, your homeschool program gives a written statement that your child meets the board's age, academic, and discipline requirements for interscholastic athletics.
What access includes
Course and activity rules come from board policy 9270 (adopted June 19, 2024), and the fees come from the district's 2026-27 student fee schedule.
- District courses each semester
- Up to 2
- High school athletics, grades 9-12
- $160 a year
- Football safety and reconditioning

- Optional club fee, grades 9-12
- $45 a year
- Instrument rental, grades 5-12

Homeschool rules and statewide help in Wisconsin
You must file PI-1206 with DPI each year between July 1 and October 15. For withdrawal from public or private school after October 15, submit or update it on or before the date attendance ends. Update it when changing districts or the number of enrolled children.
Wisconsin sets these rules:
- Subjects: Provide at least 875 instructional hours each year and a sequentially progressive curriculum in reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and health.
- Testing: Wisconsin does not require standardized testing for homeschoolers.
- Records: Keep copies of submitted PI-1206 reports; DPI retains them for seven years. Detailed instructional records are recommended, with no routine state submission required.
- Teachers: Wisconsin does not require a teaching certificate or degree to homeschool your own child.

Questions parents ask
- Can my child play on an Oconomowoc high school team?
- Yes. Your child can play interscholastic athletics, including WIAA sanctioned sports, to the same extent enrolled students can. The 2026-27 high school athletic fee is $160, plus $60 for football.
- Does a course in another district count toward the Oconomowoc course limit?
- Yes. The two-course cap is a total across all public school districts in a semester, so one course elsewhere leaves room for one in Oconomowoc.
- Can my student take one WCTC class without applying?
- Yes. Students not seeking a degree or financial aid can take courses without applying to the college.
Turn support into your child’s next lesson
Local classes cover the subjects they offer. We teach the remaining subjects, so a local class can stay part of the year without becoming the whole curriculum.
